An elegant way to fight widespread copyright infringement on the Internet

Picking the right battlefield and the right target

Digital Rights Management techniques have failed to curb Internet piracy:

  • because artificial restrictions make the legitimate product inferior to the pirate competitor;
  • because they focus on preventing the initial leak, rather than preventing it from spreading;
  • because they focus on paying customers, rather than those who spread the files.

A successful anti-piracy strategy must:

  • provide a better customer experience and reward customer loyalty;
  • dry up pirate networks;
  • lure major file sharers away from pirate networks.
